Casino Win/Loss Statements: What They Show and How to Request One

In briefA win/loss statement is the casino's own summary of your tracked play over a year. It is useful, but it only knows what the casino could see, and some of it is estimated.

Audit, auditor and analysis

A casino win/loss statement is a summary, prepared by the casino, of the play it recorded under your name during a period, usually a calendar year. In a land-based casino it is built from activity tracked on a player's club or loyalty card. Online casinos and sportsbooks keep the equivalent in your account's transaction history. People typically request one to check their own records, to settle a disagreement about a year's result or to support their paperwork when filing taxes.

It is a helpful document with clear limits. Knowing what goes into it explains why it rarely matches your own memory, and sometimes not even your own log.

What a statement usually includes

  • Your name and loyalty account number
  • The period covered
  • Totals for slot or electronic play
  • Totals for rated table play
  • A net win or loss figure for the period
  • Often a breakdown by month or by property, where a group runs several casinos
  • A disclaimer explaining that the figures are based only on tracked play

Why slot figures and table figures differ in accuracy

Slots and electronic games

When a loyalty card is inserted, the machine records money played and money paid out electronically. These figures are generally precise for the time the card was in the machine. Any session played without the card is invisible to the statement.

Table games

Table play is "rated" by staff, who note roughly how long you played and your average bet. The casino then estimates the result. That makes table figures approximations by design. Our comparison of slot machines and table games covers other ways the two formats differ.

Poker rooms

Card room play is often not included at all, because the house takes a rake rather than playing against you. Players who enjoy Texas Hold'em generally need their own records for those sessions.

How to request one

  1. Find the right desk. Most casinos handle requests through the player's club or loyalty desk. Some have an online form or a mailing address for written requests.
  2. Prepare identification. Expect to confirm your identity, since the statement contains personal financial information.
  3. Specify the period. Calendar year statements are the most common; other ranges may be possible.
  4. Allow time. Requests made early in the year, when many people ask, can take longer to fulfil.
  5. For online accounts, look in the account area for transaction or activity history. Many operators let you download it as a file; if not, support can usually provide it.

Statement, tax form and your own log

The three work best together. Our article What Is a W-2G? explains that form, and our gambling log template offers a simple layout for the personal record. A statement can back up a log; it is not a substitute for one.

A note on taxes

Statements are often requested at tax time, but rules on reporting gambling winnings and losses vary by country and, in the US, between federal and state level, and they change from time to time. Casinos themselves generally say the statement is an informational summary rather than a tax document. How it can be used is a question for a qualified tax professional, not for the casino desk and not for this article.

Common questions

Why are the slot totals on my statement so large?

Slot figures often count every credit played through the machine, including credits won and then replayed, so the gross amounts can dwarf what you actually brought. The net figure is the one to compare with your own records.

Can I get a statement if I never used a loyalty card?

Usually not for land-based play, because there is nothing recorded under your name. Online accounts always keep a history.

Can a statement be corrected?

You can ask, but the casino can only work from what it tracked. If something looks wrong, raise it with the player's club and keep your own evidence, such as cash withdrawal receipts and your log.

Worth knowing

A win/loss statement is a casino's view of the play it could see, precise for carded slot sessions and approximate for tables. Ask for it, compare it with your own log, and treat any difference as a reason to keep better records next year. Casino play is open only to adults; seeing the year's net result in black and white is also a good moment to decide whether next year's budget should be smaller.
