What Guides Our Work

Gambling writing tends to swing between two extremes. On one side there is promotional copy that makes every bonus sound like a gift and every jackpot sound close. On the other there is alarm that treats anyone who buys a lottery ticket as a problem. We try to work in the space between: plain explanation for adults who make their own choices and deserve accurate information to make them with.

Principle one: the margin is always part of the story

Whether it is called house edge, vig, overround or rake, every form of commercial gambling has a built-in cost to the player. An article about a game or market that leaves that cost out is incomplete, however entertaining it reads. So we name it, and where possible we show where it comes from, as in our guide on how to read betting odds.

Principle two: numbers you can check

We do not invent statistics, survey results or expert quotes. When we use a figure, it should either come from the published rules of a game or from arithmetic simple enough for a reader to repeat with a calculator. The lottery odds in our article on the odds of winning the lottery are worked out line by line for exactly that reason.

Principle three: no systems, no promises

Nobody on our team knows a way to beat a random number generator, a fairly dealt deck or a well-run lottery draw. Betting systems that claim otherwise usually rearrange risk rather than remove it. We will explain what a strategy can and cannot do, but we will never tell a reader that a method guarantees a profit.

Principle four: respect for the reader

Our readers are adults. We explain rather than preach, and we assume people can weigh a cost against the enjoyment they get from it. Respect also means honesty about harm: gambling can become a problem for anyone, and we keep the warning signs visible across the site rather than hiding them on one page.

Principle five: legality is local

A product that is licensed in one country can be illegal in the next. We write for an international readership, so we avoid suggesting that anything is legal everywhere and we remind readers to check their own local rules before they play.

Principle six: mistakes get fixed in the open

Rules change, operators update their terms and writers make errors. When something on the site turns out to be wrong or out of date, we correct it and, for anything meaningful, say what changed. Our corrections promise sets out how that works in practice.

How these principles show up in practice

  • Every article about real-money play carries a reminder about age limits and budgets.
  • Promotions are described together with their conditions, never on their own.
  • We write about trends and technology with curiosity, but without hype about returns.
  • We would rather publish fewer articles than publish one we cannot stand behind.

If the margin is missing from the page, the article is not finished yet.

The publishing test

Checks a draft must clear before publishing

A piece that misses one of them goes back for another draft.

  • The operator's built-in cost is named and explained
  • Each figure is quoted from published rules or calculated in full
  • No sentence hints that a method can guarantee profit
  • Promotions appear together with their conditions
  • Age limits and budgets get a mention
  • Local legality is left for the reader to confirm, never assumed
